WestJet passenger ‘made gun threats’

A drunk flight passenger threatened to take guns into Parliament in revenge for police actions at last Friday’s protests, according to multiple witnesses.

The man, who said he was a Bermudian returning home from Los Angeles, is said to have confronted numerous passengers during a ten-minute tirade on the WestJet plane from Toronto to Bermuda yesterday evening; it continued for another 15 minutes inside LF Wade International Airport as he went through Customs.

Police today said they responded to the report but after speaking to staff deemed their involvement was not necessary. Airport manager Aaron Adderley confirmed the man had not been arrested.

Three passengers have spoken to The Royal Gazette about the incident, outlining their concern that the man is now out in the community having made such threats.

The man was described as about 5ft 10in, about 230 pounds and in his 40s.

One witness said: “This guy came from the back and started to push through everyone.

“Some guy asked what are you doing, and he launched into a tirade. He said he was going to burn down the House of Parliament, he has guns and wants to kill white people.

“Nobody provoked him. He was clearly inebriated.

“He went through Customs, no problem, and went through to the baggage hall.

“His tirade was about people getting pepper-sprayed. He was showing individuals footage from Friday’s protest, he was asking them if they saw any white people getting pepper-sprayed.

“One black Bermudian told him to shut up and sit down and apologised to other people on the plane, saying Bermudians are not like this.

“I felt ashamed as a Bermudian on an aircraft. I didn’t feel threatened because the man was clearly drunk, but it was a shame. I’m quite concerned that this person may be out in the community right now. He said he has guns and wanted to kill people. He told one guy he wanted to know where he slept; he was going to find him.

“I’ve no idea whether he was arrested. I was amazed there was no security there on the runway to deal with him.

Another witness said: “It started during the landing process. He was at the back of the plane. He literally pushed his way from the back row all the way to the front. The flight attendant was yelling at him to stop but he refused.

“An elderly lady started to ask him to calm down because there were children there. He was yelling at her and swearing at her. This was an 80-year-old woman who was respectfully asking him not to speak to people like that.” A third witness said: “He said, ‘Don’t think we don’t have guns. We are bringing guns to Parliament.’

“It was a good half-hour. He was literally in my face, asking me what I’m looking at, saying, ‘Do you have a problem with me?’

“He told one man, ‘I will wait for you outside. I will make sure you don’t stay on the island.’

“He threatened three people. He said, ‘I’m taking guns to Parliament’. There was no authoritative action taken, he made it through the passport checks, and we had to wait until we were picking up our bags before anything was done.”

The Bermuda Police Service said in a statement this morning: “Around 5.30pm on Sunday, police officers responded to a report of an alleged unruly passenger on a WestJet flight from Toronto, Canada, to Bermuda.

“On arrival at LF Wade International Airport, the officers spoke with the pilot and crew of flight 2710, as well as a male passenger said to be involved.

“However, no offences were disclosed at that time and therefore no further police involvement was necessary.”

Mr Adderley said he understood that there had been an incident involving an unruly passenger on a WestJet flight, and that there were no arrests made.

Meanwhile a WestJet spokeswoman also confirmed the incident, stating: “At the request of the crew, the police attended the scene. There were no injuries and we thank our guests on the flight for their patience.”
