Man admits assaulting ex-girlfriend
A Sandys man has admitted attacking his ex-girlfriend and breaking her phone.
Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Shilo Payne pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman and damaging her phone in Sandys on June 2.
The court heard that the 32-year-old approached the complainant outside Bone Fish Bar & Grill in Dockyard at about 11.30pm.
He put his hands around her but she told him not to. She left and made her way towards Snorkel Park, where she saw Payne waiting outside.
Payne told her he wanted to talk to her but slapped her in the face, snatched her phone and ran into Snorkel Park.
She caught up with him and the defendant grabbed her wrist and twisted. He then threw her phone, estimated to have been worth $199, on the ground.
In court, defence lawyer Richard Horseman, who called the incident a “relationship dispute”, said his client apologised to the complainant.
He added that Payne, who was last before the courts in 2011, had already replaced the phone.
Mr Horseman, who noted that his client is under treatment at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute and is “not really employable”, requested a conditional discharge or a suspended sentence.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, however, adjourned sentencing until December 20 for a victim impact statement to be prepared and for the Crown to confirm Payne had replaced the phone.
