Society of Blind wins Christmas tree contest
The Bermuda Society of the Blind took top honours at this year’s Charity Christmas Tree event, receiving a $2,500 donation.
The fifth annual event, sponsored by Sun Life Financial International, tasked several of the island’s charities to decorate Christmas trees, which were put on display in Washington Mall.
The BSoB said their tree was designed “to be experienced with senses other than sight with smooth and textured ornaments, jingle bells and pine-scented cardboard trees”.
“Other decorations relate to people who live their lives with no or compromised vision,” the charity stated. “Canes, from the candy variety to actual white mobility canes, a variety of glasses and magnifiers and photos captioned in Braille bring this magical tree to life even for those who cannot see it.”
Action on Alzheimer’s & Dementia took home second place and a $1,000 donation with a tree decorated with Christmas cards featuring artwork from the charity’s clients.
The Matilda Smith Williams Seniors Residence claimed third place and a $750 donation for its tree highlighting retirement with decorations depicting travel, cruises, beaches, passports, nurses and medication.
Bermuda Red Cross won the competition’s People’s Choice Award and a $1,500 prize.
