The Department of E-Commerce is set to host its third annual Safer internet Day, aimed at helping seniors avoid online scams.

The free event on February 22, sponsored by Clarien Bank, is designed to help seniors protect themselves online from various internet schemes which often target senior citizens.

A spokesman for the department said: “Although the use of the internet and related technologies is increasingly convenient and prolific, so are its dangers.

“On Safer internet Day, visitors will interact with professionals from the Cybertips team, the Bermuda Police Service, social media expert Stephanie Lee, and the Bermuda National Library, who, together with major sponsor Clarien, will share tips and tricks on how to safely enjoy the many benefits that technology brings.”

Marisa Stones, the director of E-Commerce, said the initiative stems from the Cybertips programme, which focuses on upholding the safe use of the internet by the public.

“The Cybertips team has been hard at work, actively reaching into the community and encouraging more deliberate thought about, and adoption of, safer internet practices on the island,” Dr Stones said.

The Safer internet Day event will be held at the Cathedral Hall on Church Street. It will start at 10.30am, and will conclude at 1.30pm.
