The sentencing of Shantoine Prinston Burrows to at least 35 years in prison before being eligible for parole sends a “clear and unambiguous message”, Bermuda’s Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police says.

In a statement released yesterday, Sean Field-Lament said that “heinous, cold-blooded crimes” such as the murder of Rickai Swan “will not be tolerated by our society”.

“Members of the public should take solace that perpetrators of these crimes will be held accountable and face the consequences of their actions,” Mr Field-Lament said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Swan family and it is our sincere hope that this sentencing will bring closure and allow them to move on, in some respect, with their normal lives.”

Handing down the sentence shortly before 5pm on Monday, Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons said Mr Burrows showed “some premeditation” in committing the murder and displayed the “mindset of a person intent on killing”.

Mr Burrows was convicted in October 2016 of the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Mr Swan, who was socialising with friends outside Southampton Rangers Sports Club. He was also found guilty of injuring Damiko Gibbons.

Mr Field-Lament praised the “professionalism” of those involved with the investigation, including detectives, forensic investigator, and others, as well as the prosecutors who “worked tirelessly” on the case.

“We also take this opportunity to thank all members of the public who had the courage to come forward and give evidence,” Mr Field-Lament said.

“The result should reinforce public confidence in the police, DPP, and the criminal justice system, and encourage citizens to come forward with information to assist detectives in these challenging investigations.”
