Volunteers needed for Tall Ships regatta

Ahoy there!: the tall ship Picton Castle

Organisers of this year’s tall ships regatta are still on the lookout for volunteers.

Nineteen tall ships carrying around 1,100 crew are signed up to take part in the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, which features stops in six countries and marks the 150th Anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. Ships are set to arrive in St George’s between May 26 and May 31 before moving to Hamilton between June 1 to June 5.

Craig Nikolai, of the project management team for the event, said: “Like an awful lot of events, we are relying on volunteers to help make sure this is a resounding success.

“It is a great opportunity to join the fun and be up close to the tall ships fleet, their crews and trainees and to help make Bermuda shine as we show them what Bermudian hospitality is all about.

“We need whatever help and support you can provide so our fleet, captains, crew and trainees are all well supported during their brief visit.”

Volunteers will be asked to commit to at least two four-hour shifts during the event, manning information desks or the crew centre, assisting with retail sales, watching gates at trainee events, helping to set up or clean up, and provide transportation. The public can also ask to volunteer as a liaison officer, although that post requires a three-day commitment.

As well as volunteers, there are still spaces available to people who want to be trainees on board the ships. Trainees must be at least 16 and bursaries of up to 75 per cent of the total cost are available for those demonstrating financial need and who are aged between 16 and 25.
