An initiative is being developed to prepare workers to take up construction jobs.

The National Talent Pool is being spearheaded by the Department of Workforce Development.

Patricia Gordon-Pamplin, Minister of Home Affairs, said that forecasts suggested that activity with new construction projects could “remain steady” during the next five-year period.

“The development of a list of talented general labourers and construction workers will undoubtedly assist employers seeking ‘work-ready’ individuals,” the Minister said.

“The construction industry recognises the need for individuals to possess basic ‘core knowledge and proficiency’ in the crafts. In this regard, the Department of Workforce Development and the Bermuda Construction Association are organising worksite safety training courses to prepare workers.”

Ms Gordon-Pamplin acknowledged the need for a “certified and skilful workforce” to deal with technological changes and advances.

“The department is ready to help those who wish to seriously engage in programmes that will teach them best practice based on accredited industry standards.”

Those interested are being encouraged to register “to increase the chance of being selected to work on a current or future construction project”.

To register, people must first complete the Employment Intake form, available at the Department or online at www.dwd.bm. Next, they must prepare a written résumé along with work references. Career Development Officers are available to assist.

Finally, they must bring a passport or any document showing Bermudian citizenship.

Candidates should also be prepared to participate in both a health and safety programme, as well as an introductory craft skills programme.

“We want to provide you with the best support to increase your chances of obtaining work opportunities in this fast-growing industry,” the minister said.
