The Relay for Life wants you
The Relay for Life, one of Bermuda’s top causes in the fight against cancer, remains open for registration until midnight this Sunday.
The island’s fourth relay, which will be taking place May 12 to 13 at the North Field of the National Sports Centre, marks the same month as the opening of the radiation treatment facility at the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.
Offering the treatment in Bermuda means that residents will no longer have to travel abroad for radiation therapy — allowing patients to remain on the island and receive the same standard of treatment at considerably less expense and disruption. The service will be offered free of charge for those unable to pay.
Ironshore is the lead sponsor for the relay, a 24-hour event in which team members take turns walking around the track as well as joining in other fundraising activities.
The relay has proven a great success, and in its first three years raised more than half-a-million dollars towards the radiation facility.
Ironshore, which has committed to a second three-year sponsorship of the relay, has already donated $105,000 to the cause.
That windfall derives from Ironshore’s annual sponsorship on top of staff fundraisers, with teams continuing their support through the relay itself.
In a statement, the company said that this year’s Relay for Life was a bittersweet occasion, as last summer “we very suddenly lost our colleague and great friend Fredericka “Freddie” Jabbar to cancer”.
“Freddie was the face of Ironshore and a true champion of the Relay for Life event — our sponsorship this year is dedicated in her name.”
After the Sunday night deadline, the only way you can register is by coming to XL Catlin on May 10 at 5.30pm to sign up your team.
