Keep Bermuda Beautiful is encouraging the community to help clean up the island ahead of the 35th America’s Cup.

As part of the Clean Up for the Cup campaign, KBB is inviting individuals or teams to participate.

The charity mailed one trash bag to every residential address in Bermuda to fill with trash found around the island May 13 or 14.

Once full, the bags should be tied and put out on the side of the roads in clear view for collection.

Some one billion people around the world are estimated to watch Bermuda host the America’s Cup.

There will be teams in more than 20 locations over the next few days.

Two dozen employees from XL Catlin will clean up Corkscrew Hill as one of their charity projects during the company’s Global Day of Giving on Friday, May 12.

Governor John Rankin along with Government House staff will head out to Spanish Point Park to clean up any existing litter and assist the Parks Department’s efforts to make the area ready for public use as one of the prime viewing spots during America’s Cup racing.

On Saturday morning, both the Pembroke Rotary Club and St George’s Rotary Club members will clean up the Ducking Stool on North Shore in Pembroke and Barry Road in St George’s, respectively.

Anyone living in Hamilton Parish can go out at 9am on Saturday, May 13 to either Shelly Bay or Duck’s Puddle and pick up supplies to use. There may also be a team to join at Bay Corner in Bailey’s Bay.

If you live in the West and want to join a team, head to Boaz Island at 10am on Saturday to help clean up the shoreline. Look for the KBB sign near the Boaz Island gas station, or call KBB on 799-5142 for details.

Also on Saturday morning, OBA teams will be in Devonshire starting from the Barkers Hill at Vesey Street, on Devon Springs Road and on Watlington Road East.

Butterfield & Vallis employees will be busy cleaning up Astwood Park in Warwick.

Participants are asked to place their full bags in easily spotted locations by the side of the road. Those cleaning up along the Railway Trail can take their bag out to the intersection with a main road.

KBB executive director Anne Hyde said: “Use your bag that came in the mail. If you did not receive one, use any trash bag you have and if you can put glass bottles and metal cans into blue recycling bags too, that would be great. Take a little time this weekend to do this one small action. Fill one bag with litter. If thousands of people do this, our island will really be looking her best for America’s Cup and all the other great events that are headed our way. If you are too busy this weekend, this is a call to action that you can take next week or beyond. Do your part. Let’s welcome the world and show off our island paradise.”
