Stranded jet skiers rescued

Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre

Two people were left stranded about a mile offshore when their jet ski broke down on Sunday.

After unsuccessful attempts to flag down boats in the area they were eventually assisted by a passing boat and made it safely back to shore.

In its incident report, Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said it was contacted by police at about 8.48pm and informed of a 911 call from a jet skier broken down off St David’s.

The duty officer spoke with the caller and determined that there were two people on board the jet ski, which was within 100m of marker SG4 by the entrance to Town Cut, St George’s Harbour.

They did not know how to deploy their anchor and “after unsuccessful attempts to flag down vessels in area, [the] intention was to swim for shore — approximately one mile”.

According to the report, they were advised to stay with the jet ski as this would give a better chance of them being sighted.

The caller also informed BMOC that his friend’s phone was dead and his phone’s battery had little power left.

“While on the line persons could be heard whistling, and calling boat in area which diverted to assist,” the report added.

BMOC advised them to preserve power and call when under tow. At 9.13pm, they reported that they were safely alongside in St David’s.
