A mural designed to celebrate the sporting heritage of St George’s Cricket Club is to be unveiled this Cup Match.

The Chewstick Foundation worked with children from the St George’s Community Centre summer programme through its community art programme.

Tiffany Paynter, supervisor at St George’s Community Centre, approached Chewstick and asked if they could help create the mural.

Chewstick described the project as a “welcome continuation of the CCAP objective to be a catalyst for positive activity and interaction”.

Since the CCAP launched in 2012, it has used public art as an agent for change while recognising Bermuda’s heroes, legends and cultural icons.

Having recently completed murals at Mount Hill and Gombeys at Clearwater, Chewstick said they were pleased to consult on a mural that could be enjoyed by cricket enthusiasts and be unveiled on such a significant occasion — the commemoration of the emancipation of Bermuda’s slave population.

The staff at St George’s Community Centre who supported the installation included Ms Paynter, senior community worker Carla Watson and their summer art specialist and aspiring graphic designer Ardon Heyliger.

The community centre staff and summer students worked over the past month planning the design of the wall with lead artist for the project Gavin Smith and St George’s Cricket Club’s president Neil Paynter.

The mural celebrates the club’s Cup Match captains and features the club crest, motto and silhouettes of cricketers in action.
