A 62-year-old man died yesterday after losing consciousness while snorkelling.

Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said it was contacted by the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences’ research boat Henry Stommel just after 10am to report that it had an unresponsive diver on board near North Rock.

The man, a visitor to the island, was rushed ashore and taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

But police said the man was pronounced dead at the hospital. A police spokesman said the man would not be identified until next of kin had been informed.
