Work to repair the Spirit of Bermuda following a crash with a ferry on Friday night will be conducted over the coming weeks.

Branwen Smith-King, executive director with the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, said that damage to the vessel was mostly confined to the bowsprit.

“An initial survey indicates that all other systems including the hull are fine,” she said.

The incident occurred in Dundonald Channel in Sandys when the ship collided with the ferry Resolute shortly after 9pm. No injuries were reported.

According to Ms Smith-King, the organisation was co-operating fully with the investigation.

“It is our belief that the captain and crew acted in a professional manner,” she said.

Repairs to the vessel will be carried out over the next few weeks.

“It’s our hope to have this work completed so the 2017-18 school voyages can commence as scheduled,” Ms Smith-King said.

“The replacement of the bowsprit will be necessary for future overseas voyages.”

The safety of both students and crew is the top priority of the organisation, Ms Smith-King said.

“We would like to thank the Bermuda public for their assistance, concerns and best wishes,” she said.

Ms Smith-King said a further update would be provided once the results of various surveys of the ship are known.
