As Hurricane Jose passes to the island’s west this morning the Caribbean is bracing itself for yet another major weather system to steamroller through the region.

Jose is expected to bring strong winds and rain to Bermuda today and into tomorrow after it passes to the island’s west and tracks north off the east coast of the United States.

Meanwhile, the storm-ravaged Caribbean is under threat yet again, this time from Tropical Storm Maria, which is expected to strengthen into a hurricane.

A six-strong team of Belco linemen are due to travel to the storm-damaged British Virgin Islands to help restoration efforts.

They had been expected to leave yesterday to help repair the damage left behind by Hurricane Irma, but have postponed the trip until midweek while the Caribbean awaits the arrival of Tropical Storm Maria.

Over the next four days, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Anguilla, and Antigua and Barbuda are all in the line of fire of Maria, which is forecast to become a Category 3 hurricane by tomorrow evening.

Maria is not considered a potential threat to Bermuda at this stage.

At 6pm yesterday, it was about 1,180 nautical miles to the east-southeast of the island, and its closest point of approach within the next three days is forecast to be 864 nautical miles to the south on Wednesday.

A third system in the Atlantic, Tropical Depression Lee, was just under 1,900 nautical miles east-southeast of Bermuda at 6pm yesterday. It is heading west-northwest, and its closest point of approach within the next three days is forecast to be 1,500 nautical miles east-southeast tomorrow afternoon.
