Clinician to host talk on race and trauma
A renowned clinician and educator will return to the island next week to speak about race and trauma.
Kenneth Hardy, a professor of family therapy at Drexel University in Philadelphia, is being brought back to the island by the Family Centre.
While on the island, Dr Hardy will offer training to staff at the Department of Education and the Inter Agency Committee for Children and Families.
Dr Hardy will also give a public presentation on race and trauma on October 25, delivering “part two” of a presentation he gave on the island in February.
In a statement, the Family Centre said: “Dr Hardy will explore and outline the hidden trauma wounds and how they limit the life experiences and choices of many youth of colour and share with us how these wounds continue to hamper relationships while remaining undetectable.”
Martha Dismont, executive director of the Family Centre, said: “We are very fortunate to be given this opportunity through supportive funding to bring Dr Hardy to the island.
“His work, and workshops on understanding unaddressed trauma, particularly in people of colour, should enlighten the public, and help to ‘ground’ the work of clinicians on the island.
“I am also very pleased that the Ministry of Education has contracted to utilise Dr Hardy’s expertise in their professional development platform for their staff.”
Dr Hardy has lead workshops internationally and has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Dateline NBC and on PBS.
His public presentation will be held at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity church hall from 6.30pm to 8pm.
