Boy Scouts take to the airwaves
Bermuda’s Boy Scouts this weekend spoke with troops from across the world without leaving Hog Bay Level.
As part of their annual “jamboree on the air” and “jamboree on the internet”, the scouts made contact with groups from Denmark, Italy, France, the United States and Canada with amateur radios.
Around 20 scouts and scout leaders were joined by radio operators Tony Siese, Glen Cuoco, Walter Carlington and Eugene Raynor for the event, along with John Rankin, the Governor.
Geoff Rothwell, the chief commissioner of scouts, said: “When we were young we interacted with other school children from around the world through a pen pal programme.
“With today’s technological advances, the JOTA-JOTI is essentially creating the same program for scouts through the internet.
“It’s a great way for our Scouts to learn about different cultures, tolerance, and collaboration. It also creates a opportunity for them to explore technology and develop skills in this area.”
Mr Raynor said: “We had so much fun that we will be back next year and, maybe we will earn another merit badge.”
