Artist’s support for stricken Dominica

Helping the recovery effort: an example of Joan Aspinall’s work, which will be displayed at Washington Mall (Photograph supplied)

Bermudian artist Joan Aspinall is to use her art to support hurricane-hit Dominica.

Ms Aspinall is to sell a collection of her work at the Washington Mall to raise funds for the relief effort from today.

Ms Aspinall said she had visited Dominica several times, including earlier this year, and was stunned by the devastation seen on the island.

She added: “It is heart-sickening. I was so happy to see the progress they made after the devastation of Hurricane David in the 70s. I raised funds to help them at that time as well, and even met their lovely former premier, Eugene Charles.”

Ms Aspinall partnered with Dominican Jeannine Smith to raise money for disaster relief. Ms Aspinal said she will donate thousands of art prints, lithographs and canvases, with funds raised going towards the island’s recovery.

Her work will be displayed in Washington Mall today and tomorrow and on several days next month.

Ms Aspinall said: “We are not a charity holding out a tin cup. This is an entirely different concept. If you give us something, then we will give you something back.”

Those interested in supporting the effort can buy four small art prints for $10, with large, signed lithographs available for $20.

Ms Aspinall added: “I had prints in canvas of our magical mermaid collection especially made for this event.

“I would love to sell my large canvases as well, and am willing to turn over the full price to Dominica.

“They would be ideal for commercial businesses, offices, or private collectors.”
