Powergirl pumped up for Lip Sync Battle
Family Centre is setting the stage for its second annual Lip Sync Battle charity fundraiser.
Eight teams are expected to compete next month in an effort to topple defending champions, the Arch Angels from Arch Insurance, and raise money for the centre.
Patrina “Powergirl” O’Connor, who will host the event for the second year, is excited to be able to support Family Centre.
Ms O’Connor said: “I wanted to get involved because I believe strongly in the Family Centre’s mission.
“I know that strengthening families will create a healthier Bermuda. Working at Big Brothers Big Sisters I get to see first hand some of the work that the Family Centre does and the difference it makes.
Ms O’Connor added: “I also got involved because I am a big fan of lip syncing. It is so much fun to put on a costume and become whatever artist you want.”
She said she was happy to return because of how much she enjoyed last year’s show.
Ms O’Connor added: “Judges Nadanja Bailey, Nikita Robinson and Lamont Robinson are hilarious and get right into character.
“The performers were over the top, making the judge’s job even harder.”
Among the challengers this year are the Bermuda Police Service, the Department of Corrections, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service and the Bermuda Business Development Agency.
Mark “Sybil” Anderson, a special guest performer at the event, said he was thrilled to be asked back.
Mr Anderson said: “Last year, it was a wonderful evening. We had a great crowd and a great number of companies got involved.
“I was really surprised by the number of performers, and I believe there will be an even bigger selection this year.”
And the star performer had a few tips for would-be winners.
Mr Anderson said performers needed to do more than know the song if they wanted to steal the show.
He said: “The advice I would give is don’t just get up there and lip sync the song. You need to tell the story of the song.
“Use the whole stage. It’s a big stage, so don’t just stand in one spot. Perform. And have fun.”
Ms O’Connor added: “Go all out with your costumes. Get into character. Give the judges expression, dance moves and become that artist.”
The competition will be held on Friday, November 17, at the Fairmont Southampton Ballroom. Tickets cost between $75 and $100, and are available at PTix.bm.
