A support group for families of road crash victims is being set up.

The group behind A Piece of the Rock, a documentary about road safety in Bermuda, is hoping to start the process at a town hall meeting tomorrow evening.

The campaign manager for the group said: “Over the past seven years alone, over 13,000 people have been involved in road crashes.

“More than 10 per cent of these road crashes result in severe life-threatening injuries where families are left to take care of loved ones for many years to come and in some cases for life.

“In addition there have been 100 road fatalities during this period with 14 people having died this year alone. There are literally thousands of affected families who are suffering with no active support network to help them.”

Along with helping to bring affected families together, the town hall discussion is hoped to open dialogue between concerned members of the public and road safety experts.

Among those taking part in the event are representatives from the Road Safety Council, CADA, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, the Bermuda Police Service and emergency medical technicians.

The organiser added: “The purpose of this meeting is to continue the momentum generated from the road safety documentary and ongoing campaign, emphasising the need for urgent legislative change and enforcement needed to make Bermuda road safer and prevent more families from suffering.”

The meeting will take place from 6pm to 8pm tomorrow evening at the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service’s Recreational Hall on King Street.
