The City of Hamilton is to carry out improvements on Union Street next week.
Work will include widening the western sidewalk between Dundonald and Victoria Streets.
Overhead cables will also be moved underground, grates will be fitted around trees and asphalt will be replaced with the City’s standard patterned
brick.
A city spokeswoman said the work will begin on Monday and is expected to last between five and six weeks.
The spokeswoman added disruption will be kept to a minimum but parking on the western side of the street and in the Union Street car park will be affected.
Traffic may also be reduced to a single lane at times.
Ian Hind, city senior engineer, said: “We are looking forward to getting this project started.
“For the past year, we have been doing back-to-back upgrades to the city car parks and many of the city junctions.
“Beautification in North Hamilton is important as it is an historic and cultural area and it is encompassed in our City tours.
“We look forward to making the whole area look much better.”
The spokeswoman added that drivers and pedestrians should use caution in the area while work is carried out.
