A veteran Bermuda banker was yesterday remembered for his “exemplary career”.

Luis Douglas, who worked with the Bank of Bermuda for more than three decades until 2000, died on Boxing Day from pneumonia.

A spokeswoman for HSBC, which acquired the bank in 2004, said: “Luis was known for his highly competitive and driven nature which was balanced through his keen sense of humour and the immense pride he had for his colleagues.

“For this reason, he earned the respect and admiration of all who had the opportunity and privilege of working with him.

“Luis will be a huge miss to all of us and on behalf of the entire HSBC Bermuda team, we wish to extend our sincere condolences to his wife Peggy, his children Christina, Drew, Lyle and their families.”

Mr Douglas started work at the bank in 1967 and was “instrumental” in the development of a number of the bank’s operations. He joined the bank’s executive management committee in 1985 and remained a member until he retired in 2000.

Mr Douglas was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1944 and moved to Bermuda in 1959.

Mr Douglas attended the University of Akron, in Ohio, after he graduated from Saltus Grammar School.

He married Margaret “Peggy” Andrews in 1966 and, in addition to three children, had five grandchildren.

A celebration of Mr Douglas’s life will be held at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club in Paget today starting at 4.30pm.

The family has asked for donations to the Salvation Army instead of flowers.
