An island-wide garbage “blitz” cleared any roadside backlog of residential waste yesterday, according to Ministry of Public Works.

A spokeswoman said seven trash trucks, two hustle trucks and six ministry dump trucks took part in the clean up to remove trash from every neighbourhood.

She added: “Public Works can confirm that any backlog of residential waste which was along the roadside was cleared by 4pm this afternoon. If there is any trash along the roadside, it was placed after the 4pm collection deadline.”

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the public works minister, promised the “island-wide blitz” at a press conference on Monday. It came after garbage collectors ended a work-to-rule over concerns about the lack of staffing and trash trucks.

Colonel Burch also announced on Monday that trash collections would be done once a week for a ten-week period from next week.

He explained: “This time will allow us to conduct a full assessment of the trucks that are serviceable, conduct extensive repairs, complete the TCD relicensing process and return a larger number into the operational fleet.”
