Ira Philip helped spread the word about the good work of local Freemasons, according to the organisation.

The Freemasons’ Fund For Bermuda today paid tribute to the veteran journalist who died this week, aged 92.

Mr Philip was a frequent champion of the Freemasons in his columns spanning decades at multiple news organisations.

The FFFB said: “Ira was a Freemason of longstanding, from which he displayed all the tenants and principles of freemasonry which was evident for all to see and from which many in our community benefited.

“The FFFB does not solicit funds from the community but rather donates to Bermuda’s charities from funds solely generated by Freemasons themselves.

“One of Brother Ira’s contributions was his journalistic skills with which he ably reported in the print media of our many donations to charities now in excess of $300,000.

“Additionally, as we all know, that in Masonic circles he was known to pop up regularly at installation ceremonies and special Masonic gatherings, particularly for overseas distinguished visitations, with his little pocket camera snapping memorable photographs and providing the appropriate coverage accordingly in the print media.

“The brethren know that he has earned his place in the Grand Lodge above. He will be missed.”
