Win someone a perfect smile
Bizarre dares are all part and parcel of raising money for young people’s charity Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.
Island celebrities have kissed a pig, jumped into a container of live roaches and thrown themselves into the sea in full beauty pageant dress for the BBBS regular fundraiser “How Much Would You Pay To See Me ...?”.
But as the charity gears up for another round of dares, it has teamed up with Positive Image Dental to offer members of the public the chance to win a full mouth makeover.
Patrina O’Connor-Paynter, BBBS managing director, said: “While it wasn’t a dare that could be acted out on stage I thought the idea was awesome.
“We see the programmes on TV where people are given the opportunity of having a full mouth makeover and now someone on our island will be given that same opportunity.
“I know this will be huge blessing to someone.”
Ms O’Connor-Paynter explained that the group hoped to raise at least $5,000 for charity by offering its services free to one lucky winner.
She added: “People would make donations in support of this act with all proceeds going to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.”
Ms O’Connor-Paynter said: “This partnership is amazing as it is giving back in more ways than one.
“While it is a fundraiser for BBBS, someone from the Bermuda public will be given a life-changing gift that they would not be able to otherwise afford.”
The charity has asked people to write letters that explain why someone should win the mouth makeover and people can also nominate themselves.
Ms O’Connor-Paynter said the winner would be announced during the “How Much Would You Pay To See Me ...?” fundraiser on June 13.
During the event, celebrities and members of the business world accept dares and raise money for charity by asking the public for pledges.
Allison Lacoursiere, office manager at Positive Image Dental, said she was keen to see dentist Christopher Allington take to the stage.
But Dr Allington said the group wanted to do something more meaningful for the fundraiser and to celebrate the charity’s 40th anniversary and so came up with the contest.
He added: “It’s been an organisation that has been helping children on the island for a long time and they do sometimes struggle with raising enough funds to do what they want to do.
“Then they also struggle with being able to match enough children to volunteers.
“So we came up with this idea of doing a promotion where people can nominate someone to get dental work done that they couldn’t otherwise get done.”
Dr Allington said Positive Image wanted to highlight the charity while also drawing attention to the importance of oral health.
Ms Lacoursiere explained that BBBS would vet the applications before the finalists are called in to the office for an exam.
She added that the person most in need would be chosen for the makeover, which could be worth up to $30,000 depending on the work required.
The deadline for submissions is June 6 and nominations should be sent to bbbs@bbbs.bm, via the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda Facebook page or dropped off to the office at 12 Wesley Street.
Donations can be made at bdatix.bm under the link “How Much would you pay to see Me…?”, at Positive Image Dental or the BBBS office.
The How Much Would You Pay To See Me ...? fundraiser will start at 7.30pm on June 13 at the flagpole on Front Street during the Bermuda Heroes Weekend-themed Harbour Night.
