Bermudian fatally stabbed in UK

A 15-year-old Bermudian was stabbed to death in Britain on Thursday. Another 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The Bermudian schoolboy, Samuel Baker, was killed in the incident in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, the Bermuda Police Service reported yesterday.

Police from Bermuda are working with the British authorities in connection with the investigation. According to South Yorkshire Police, the attack happened during an altercation in the south of the city at about 7.50pm.

They said the boy was taken to hospital for treatment but died about an hour after the incident.

The Independent reports that Chief Superintendent Stuart Barton, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “It’s a bit of a complicated picture at the moment.”

A spokesman said: “The BPS extends our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

“What I do know is that, clearly, there’s been an altercation taken place. We don’t believe it to be a random attack.

“There may be a bit of targeting with it but it would be wrong for me to say exactly what that was only less than 12 hours since the incident occurred whilst we’re still working with the family and trying to give them some answers.

“Clearly, somebody of 15 years of age is massive concern to us.”

Mr Barton said that the force was considering the introduction of stop-and-search measures after the attack and a separate murder that took place about eight miles away from the stabbing, on Tuesday.

Michael Dunkley, the Shadow Minister of National Security released a statement on the fatal stabbing.

“We were devastated to rise this morning and learn of the fatal stabbing of a young Bermudian in the UK last evening on May 24,” he said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this most difficult time.

“Today, as Bermudians on island and overseas celebrate and share our pride as Bermudians, let us also share a prayer for the grieving family and ask for God’s comfort.”
