Andreaz turns to taste for new business

Young businessman: Andreaz Glasgow shows off his tablets

Andreaz Glasgow has found a business in offering the public a taste of something new.

The 14-year-old Berkeley Institute student has launched a new business called Guess What, which offers “flavour- tripping” experiences to allow customers to taste things in a new way.

Thanks to miraculin tablets, Andreaz can make lemons taste like lemonade, cream cheese taste like cheesecake, and salt and vinegar chips taste like they have been powdered with sugar.

He said: “We basically turn sour things sweet.

“Before I tried it myself, I was highly sceptical. Everyone seemed to be sceptical. Even the people at the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation were sceptical before they tried it.

“We did a tasting, and the majority of them were completely amazed that it actually worked.”

Andreaz said he first learnt about miraculin on social media, and immediately saw the potential.

He said: “I was scrolling through Facebook and Instagram and I saw this video by the Huffington Post about if it was fact or fiction. I thought it looked cool.

“Me being an entrepreneur, my business mind kicked in. There was no one in Bermuda doing this on a business-type scale.

“I kept it in the back of my head until I got involved in the Summer Student Entrepreneurship Programme. I had a couple of ideas, and this seemed to be the most viable of them.”

He explained that miraculin is a glycoprotein found in an African berry that is able to temporarily turn off the sensors on the tongue that register bitter and sour flavours.

By dissolving a tablet on your tongue, customers will taste everything differently for 20 to 30 minutes with acidic foods becoming sweet.

Andreaz said Guess What organises tastings for corporate and private groups, bringing miraculin tablets and a range of foods that get strong reactions.

He said: “I felt there was a need on the market for an adventurous but not high-risk experience, so that rather than partying and drinking, there is a different experience out there.

“It’s something that allows people of all ages to have an experience with friends.

“It’s definitely something that you must try once.”

He said the business also seeks to help people to make the most of the tablets for cooking.

Andreaz said: “You can make lemon pie without adding any sugar. You can make all sorts of mocktails or cocktails. It also has a lot of potential for diabetics.”

Andreaz described himself as a “serial entrepreneur”, but he feels Guess What has the potential to last.
