Cup Match safety appeal from police

Police have asked the public to help them make the Cup Match weekend safe.

A spokesman said people should contact police if they see suspicious activity.

Among the things the public should look out for are:

• Suspicious people in cars or on bikes, with dark coloured clothing and with their faces covered or people loitering around homes or businesses.

• People who have been drinking and acting irrationally or belligerently.

• Children who are at risk.

• Anyone who appears to be spiking or putting foreign substances in drinks.

If you do see someone appear to spike a drink, do not throw the drink away — hold on to it notify police and any event staff.

Police also asked the public to contact them if they know of anyone planning “antisocial behaviour”, if they feel unsafe at any of the Cup Match parties or events and if they see anyone operating a vehicle after drinking.

The spokesman said: “It should be noted the police, because of the anticipated high volume of calls, will prioritise calls on the order of importance.

“Always remember if you see something, say something.”
