School raises cash for tsunami-hit country

Pupils and teachers at Saltus Academy involved in the Saltus Service Learning Programme.

An island school is raising money to help tsunami victims in Indonesia.

Saltus Grammar School pupils chose to help the Red Cross efforts in the country as part of it’s service Learning programme, which was designed to give youngsters the chance to take a lead in community work.

Nicole Chichon, the school’s deputy headteacher, said: “Students felt that the theme of unity is an important one because it ties in with our emphasis on inclusivity and diversity.

“It is a theme that resonates not just within our school community but throughout the island and on a global stage.”

The tsunami appeal was chosen because it demonstrated how the mission of The Red Cross is in line with the school’s theme of unity, not just on a Bermuda level, but on an international basis.

Pupils at the Pembroke school, who raised money through a grub day, were touched by news of the disaster and videos shown in classes and assemblies that highlighted the damage and family hardships.
