A Bermuda College conference on race relations on the island Saturday involving a world-class British university will be live-streamed to a bigger audience because of public demand.

The event, “Race and Resistance: Understanding Bermuda Today”, will examine how modern Bermuda was shaped by its grim history of slavery and segregation, to be held on Saturday, will now also be shown in a “spillover” theatre on the campus and the marketplace area of the college as well at the original venue.

A panel of academics and activists will discuss how racism shaped present-day Bermuda.

The conference was organised by the Human Rights Commission, the Oxford Centre for Global History and the Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities Race and Resistance Network.

Organisers said the public can watch the full event or parts of the discussion.

Tickets for the main theatre, however, are limited and people who register after the main theatre is full will be put on a waiting list until a seat in the spillover area is made available.

Organisers asked people who already have tickets but will be unable to attend to return them so others can use them.

A spokeswoman for the Human Rights Commission said: “The Student Centre at the college will become a lively marketplace for the day, showcasing local literature, artists and community groups.

“The marketplace will feature various groups and individuals in support of heritage, racial justice, the arts and community building in Bermuda, and provide an opportunity to commune, share knowledge and exchange ideas.”

She added that if anyone wanted their work or organisation featured, they should contact organisers.

Lunch will be served at the Bermuda College Bookstore, but organisers said that the food served may not cater to all dietary needs.

People, however, can also bring their own lunch.

The free event will be held in Room G3100, the original venue, at the Paget college from 9am until 5pm.

The conference is free, but people are asked to make donations in support of arts charity Chewstick Foundation.
