Police yesterday identified the man killed in a blaze that tore through a West End house this month.

And it was not the first time that a fire at the house killed a member of the same family.

The body of Erroll Cross, 66, was found inside the home on Scott’s Hill Road in Somerset on November 1.

A police spokesman said that Mr Cross was found unconscious inside the two-storey house.

Grace Cross, Mr Cross’s mother, died in a fire at the same house in 2008.

The 87-year-old mother of three was found unconscious in the back of the house by firefighters. She was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but later died.

Sergeant Allan Wilkinson, of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, said that the first call to firefighters on last Thursday’s blaze suggested there could have been someone inside.

Mr Wilkinson said that there was “quite a bit of contents” in the house and firefighters had trouble getting inside to carry out a search.

The police spokesman said that “the cause of the fire remains under investigation”.

He added a family liaison officer had been assigned to help the family.

Police said they wanted to speak to anyone who may have spoken to Mr Cross in the run-up to the fire.

Mr Cross’s brother, Burnell Cross, 75, died of natural causes in an apartment attached to the same house a few weeks ago.
