In recognition of National Philanthropy Day, the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) would like to thank all of those in the community who are dedicated to charitable giving. Here in Bermuda, there are many individuals and groups who support the important work that is being done in the third sector. Through this generosity, we can create change and have a long-lasting impact on our island together. At AFP, our mission is to empower people to practice ethical fundraising through professional development, networking, research and advocacy.

Ethical fundraising is not only central to the vision, values, culture, strategy and goals of an organisation, but also remains at the core of effectively achieving ones’ mission. It is our responsibility to ensure that needed resources are ethically sought after, and that any donations received are honestly fulfilled as intended by the donor. It is critical that the philanthropic mission is above any personal gain. Demonstrating concern for the interests and wellbeing of individuals affected by their actions is also fundamental to philanthropy. These principles are achievable through the right checks and balances. Compliance with the Charity Act, standards of service that operate under best practice, and a code of ethics; all support accountability and good governance. Protection for the privacy of those who give in a Donor Bill of Rights is another important policy for ethical fundraising. The AFP is encouraging all organisations to adopt these policies and procedures to further instil confidence in our work and the way we raise funds for our perspective causes.

We would again like to express appreciation to all of those who contribute to our efforts. Through giving and a commitment to philanthropy; we can play an integral role in shaping our society into a better Bermuda for everyone.
