Members of the public are to be asked to discover their “superpower” as part of a fundraiser for a cancer charity.

The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre said their annual fundraiser’s theme would be “What’s your superpower?”

Robyn Dickinson, marketing co-ordinator for the Paget charity said the theme was picked to motivate people to help support those whose lives were affected by cancer.

Ms Dickinson added: “Within the cancer journey everybody who is involved has superpowers, whether it be a child that helps to cook dinner, or a husband who cleans the house every Saturday or a friend who drives their friend with cancer to an appointment.

“Everybody has their superpower. You just have to discover yours ... If you have been impacted, then you definitely would have had a superpower within that journey.”

The theme for the event was revealed at a launch at City Hall in Hamilton on Monday.

Sponsored teams of ten to 15 people will take part in a round the clock relay-style walk or run at the National Sports Centre in Devonshire.

Heidi Roque, team captain for St David’s Variety store, said she wanted to take part in the event because two family members had suffered from cancer.

She added: “My aunt has been able to use the facilities and that prevents her from having to travel overseas. She is elderly and retired and it is a lot easier to travel from St David’s to the centre.”

Ms Roque said Relay for Life was fun and allowed people to work together for “a good cause”.

Ron Spencer, founder of Relay for Life Bermuda, said the event had accomplished a lot over its five years of operation.

He added: “Knowing that my mother struggled with paying for chemo and radiation and understanding that individuals do not have the appropriate insurance to pay for radiation services, I am so grateful that this event has been able to do what it has done.”

Mr Spencer started the event in memory of his mother in 2014.

He said he volunteered at the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre after she died in 2008.

Mr Spencer added: “After signing up to volunteer hours at the centre and a few cancer fundraisers, I knew I wanted to do something more in my mother’s name.

“After my sisters participated in a US Relayfor Life event in California, they shared videos. I knew that Bermuda needed this event.”

Mr Spencer said: “Cancer has or will impact everyone in Bermuda.

“Giving to Relay for Life of Bermuda will allow those with no insurance or a lack of coverage access to diagnostic imaging services and radiation therapy at no cost.”

The money raised at this year’s event will go to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre Equal Access Fund which allows uninsured or underinsured clients to receive treatment without “out of pocket” payments.
