Garden club supports KBB

Volunteers who clean up litter are to get “grab and go” backpacks and other equipment after a donation from The Garden Club of Bermuda.

The club put up $3,600 for Keep Bermuda Beautiful to buy 150 backpacks, as well as trash grabbers and trash bags.

Anne Hyde, KBB’s executive director, said: “The goal is to make it as easy as possible for people to volunteer and do clean-ups on a regular basis, so we came up with the idea of creating a kit that you could grab and go.

“All volunteers need to add are their own water bottle and some gloves.”

Ms Hyde added: “We are so grateful that the garden club liked this new idea and have agreed to provide funds for us to put together 150 of these kits.”

The backpacks will identify wearers as KBB volunteers and will leave their hands free to collect garbage.

The Garden Club of Bermuda founded KBB in 1964 and continues to support the charity.

Cindy Young, president of the garden club, presented the cheque to Amy Shillingford, president of KBB, last month.

KBB supported clean-ups in 146 locations last year. More than 3,000 volunteers collected about 70,000 pounds of litter.

Ms Hyde said: “It is wonderful so many volunteers come out to help combat the blight of littering. She added: “We encourage people to support KBB’s work by either participating in clean-up days or becoming members and to respect the environment we live in by taking greater responsibility in reducing waste.”
