Police arrested eight road users for drink driving at roadside breathtest checkpoints last weekend.

A police spokesman said seven of the arrests took place on Friday night and the early hours of Saturday.

The other motorist was arrested on Saturday night.

The spokesman said: “The main objectives of the road sobriety checkpoints are to help make the roads safer and ultimately save lives.

“While there are no road sobriety checkpoints scheduled for this coming weekend, members of the public are urged not to drive or ride under the influence as police officers conducting their regular patrols will be on the lookout for any offences, including impaired driving.”
