Government to hold municipalities meetings
Meetings are to be held next month to discuss the future of Bermuda’s municipalities.
A ten-day consultation period over the future operation of the Corporations of Hamilton and St George’s, came to an end on Friday.
Now two meetings will be held on March 5 from 6.30pm at East End Primary School, St George’s, and on March 7 at 5.30pm at the Heritage Worship Centre, Pembroke.
The government has published a fact sheet to outline its plans for Hamilton and St George’s on its website, including the redevelopment of the waterfront in Hamilton and a sustainable tourism industry for the Olde Towne.
Members of the public criticised the government for its failure to outline its case at a public meeting organised by Quinell Francis, the Mayor of St George’s, last week to discuss the proposals.
Walter Roban, Minister of Home Affairs, refused to comment on why he did not attend the meeting at Penno’s Wharf.
Both Ms Francis and Charles Gosling, the Mayor of Hamilton, have criticised a lack of consultation over proposals to dissolve the two corporations and bring them under central government or run the two authorities through quangos, with government-appointed rather than elected personnel.
Government confirmed that there would be no extension of the consultation period.
