Supporters of the Bermuda End-to-End gathered with the family of the late Eugene Carmichael, one of the original organisers of the event, to commemorate a bench installed in his memory.

The bench looks out over the Great Sound from the verge of the Railway Trail in Southampton, near Five Star Island.

In a statement from End-to-End organisers, the overlook was said to be “special” to Mr Carmichael, who died last year at 78.

Event officials joined with founders Clive Cotton, Jon Borrill and Paul Rowlerson to fund the bench, and the Department of Parks helped put it in place.

Mr Rowlerson said that Mr Carmichael had pitched in from “the earliest days”.

He added: “His heart was bigger than all Bermuda and he was a constant reminder of why helping others, and truly caring about everyone around you was so affirming and rewarding. It was a privilege to know him.”

Anne Mello, chairwoman of the End-to-End board, said that the Carmichael family would host a water stop in his memory on May 4, the day of the End-to-End.

Carol Ann Henrickson, Mr Carmichael’s daughter, added: “We’ll be out in full force, laughing and remembering Eugene and his tireless campaigning for funds, caring for the charities and supporting the participants that meant so much to him.”
