Jamaican reggae superstar Buju Banton is expected to perform in Bermuda this summer.

Buju, who was released from a US prison last December after serving eight years of a ten-year sentence for conspiracy to import cocaine, is scheduled to appear on August 17 at the National Stadium.

Organisers of the event are expected to provide more information on the event soon, which will be Buju’s first performance here since 2007.

The concert is expected to pull a big crowd as has been happening in other locations.

Buju’s first major concert after his release from prison, “Long Walk to Freedom”, drew a crowd of 40,000 to the Jamaica’s National Stadium in the capital Kingston on March 16.

The concert was said to be the biggest and most talked-about event of the year in Jamaica — and possibly the Caribbean.

Buju, whose real name is Mark Myrie, has since performed to large and adoring crowds in the Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, the British Virgin Islands and Barbados.

The Long Walk to Freedom tour was also expected to stop in Grenada, St Kitts, Surinam, and in European cities, including Cologne, Amsterdam, Zurich, as well as in Portugal, France and Belgium.

Buju, a five-times Grammy Award nominee, won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for Before The Dawn.

He was presented with the award this year.

Buju will be one of two Jamaican dancehall superstars to perform in Bermuda this summer.

Teen sensation Koffee, whose real name is Mikayla Simpson, will appear at the Rising Stars event next month.

The 19-year-old reggae singer and guitarist will be at the North Field of the National Stadium on June 8.

Koffee, from Spanish Town in St Catherine’s Parish, has found an audience for her unique style since she won a talent competition at her high school in 2016.

She has notched up hits with Ragamuffin, Toast, Burning and Legend.

Koffee also shared a stage with Buju in his Long Walk to Freedom concert in Trinidad & Tobago. Soleil Laurent from the US is also expected to perform at the Rising Stars event.
