People will share stories about how they have made a difference to the lives of others at the 60th anniversary celebration of the Theatre Boycott.

The celebration, called Freedom Friday, will be held this Friday on the eve of the anniversary of the Theatre Boycott, which ran from June 15 to July 2, 1959.

Glenn Fubler said the past was important in shaping Bermuda, but that it was vital for people to continue to be a good influence on modern society.

Mr Fubler said: “While we are looking back, we are also looking forward, to draw from that inspiration of the past, and seek to make a better Bermuda today.”

He said the public should talk about the impact they have made, even if they do not attend the event.

Mr Fubler added: “It’s Heroes Weekend and everybody has some hero in them.”

He said a young person who had made a difference in the lives of other young people will also be honoured at the celebration.

Mr Fubler added that there would also be a “Wellness Check-In” from 11.30am to 12.30pm at City Hall as part of the event.

Health professionals will provide blood pressure and blood sugar screening and give healthy living advice.

Mr Fubler said: “You have to take care of yourself first. You have to take care of yourself to take of each other and to take care of the country.”

Freedom Friday will be held at City Hall theatre in Hamilton from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

The event will include short presentations and music, as well as personal stories.

Mr Fubler said people unable to attend could still take part by celebrating, appreciating and relating to each other.

He added that the public was welcome to pause and reflect on the Theatre Boycott for a minute at 1pm.

Collin Simmons, the education officer at the Bermuda Industrial Union, said the organisation was pleased to be part of the celebrations.

Mr Simmons added: “We played our part then and we still play our part today in terms of making sure change takes place in a positive way.”

Other organisations participating in the event include Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda, the Corporation of Hamilton, and the Nurses Association of Bermuda.
