Up to 8,000 people are expected to attend a weekend performance by reggae superstar Buju Banton, the concert promoter said yesterday.

Vejay Steede, the PR manager for Unity Festival Bermuda, said that concertgoers would be treated to a “spectacular, unforgettable and safe experience” on Saturday night.

Mr Steede added: “The stage is coming along, the infrastructure will be built starting tomorrow.

“It will be impressive. This team does not play.”

He thanked the Bermuda public for the “overwhelming enthusiasm, encouragement and support” the National Sports Centre event had attracted.

Mr Steede said that all concertgoers would be searched before they were admitted to the grounds.

He added that entry would be denied to anyone with food, liquids, chairs or “any prohibited items”.

Mr Steede said police officers would also be on duty to help private security staff at the event.

A number of road closures will be in effect in Devonshire and Pembroke for the festival.

They are:

• Parsons Road between Roberts Avenue and the Montpelier Road Roundabout

• Roberts Avenue will be limited to northbound traffic between Parsons Road and Palmetto Road

• Frog Lane will be limited to southbound traffic between the Frog Lane Roundabout and the Montpelier Road Roundabout

• Montpelier Road will be limited to southbound traffic between the roundabout and Happy Valley Road

The closures will begin at 6pm on Saturday and continue until 3am on Sunday.

Limited parking for the event will be available at CedarBridge Academy.

Bulls Head Car Park will be used for overflow parking for general admission ticket holders.

A free shuttle will run to the stadium from 8pm until 11pm. Return shuttle service will run from 1.30am to 3.30am.

The Arboretum will be used for parking for concertgoers with VIP tickets and will include a shuttle service to the stadium.

Ultra VIP ticket holders will be able to park at the centre.

A taxi stand will be set up just south of the Montpelier Road Roundabout and will operate from 1.30am to 3am.

Mr Steede said that the show would start at 9pm and that a limited number of tickets were still available.
