Youth photography prize created

Friend of Bermuda: Reg Grundy (File photograph)

A photography competition for schoolchildren in memory of international TV pioneer and Bermuda resident Reg Grundy has been launched.

The Dr Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition was organised by the National Museum of Bermuda and Joy Grundy, Dr Grundy’s widow.

Ms Grundy said: “It brings to life one of my husband Reg’s dreams.

“He had envisioned this for years and now, at last, it is real. Reg was happiest out in a boat on Castle Harbour, camera in hand, looking skywards to capture the endless orbits of his favourite bird, the longtail.

“Yet he did not photograph the longtail exclusively — he made photographs of everything which interested him.

“Reg believed, as I do, that a photographic competition for schoolchildren would encourage them to observe and investigate the wonder and beauty of Bermuda, help them learn patience and enable them to appreciate our island home and the people around us.”

The competition, with the tagline “show us your Bermuda”, was designed to encourage young photographers to highlight the island’s natural and cultural environment.

It is open to photographers aged between 7 and 18 years of age and entrants should capture a theme of interest — Bermuda Life, Bermuda Buildings or Bermuda Wildlife/Nature using a smart phone or digital camera.

Elena Strong, the executive director of the National Museum of Bermuda, said: “We are excited to be partnering with Mrs Grundy and have the generous support of Clarien Bank, AF Smith, Phoenix Stores and in-kind printing by Bermuda Blue Printing for this competition.

“The judges look forward to seeing the submissions — we know it will be a tough choice to pick the winning entries”.

Australian-born Mr Grundy, who died in 2016, was a key figure in the history of international television production and distribution.

Mr Grundy was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2008 and was given an OBE in 1983. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Queensland in Australia in 2004 to mark his achievements.

But wildlife photography was his passion.

He was fascinated by the longtail and his photographs of them hung on the walls of LF Wade International Airport for many years.

Judges for the competition will be Antoine Hunt, a photographer and artist, Dr Deborah Atwood, the curator of the National Museum of Bermuda and Chinni Mahadevan, the Reg Grundy photographic libraries curator.

Photographs should be submitted to the National Museum of Bermuda through its website.

The age group categories are 7 to 10, 11 to 14, and 15 to 18.

Entries can feature any or all of the themes, but only one photograph per theme will be accepted.

The deadline for submissions is November 15 and a prize-giving ceremony will be held at the National Museum on December 5.

Winning entries will be displayed at the National Museum of Bermuda in Dockyard and published in MARITimes, the National Museum of Bermuda’s twice-a-year magazine, as well as the on the museum’s website at www.nmb.bm.

They will also be featured on the Reg Grundy Wildlife website at www.nmb.bm; http://rgwildlife.com/.
