‘Old bags’ to raise funds for Family Centre

A treasure trove of designer items will be sold next week to help a charity that works with families, Family Centre.

The “Old Bags” cocktail party, fundraising sale and silent auction will be held at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club on Tuesday in aid of Family Centre.

Megan Boyle, who will cohost the event with Georgia Benevides, came up with the idea after her mother attended versions of the offbeat charity event in the United States.

Ms Boyle said: “Old bags is a funny pun — I got a great range of items, some new and some just gently used. People have been very generous.”

Designer labels include Prada, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, some of whose products were purchased new by donors. Purses, wallets, jewellery, handbags, shoes, sunglasses and fashion accessories will be among the luxury items up for grabs.

Ms Boyle said brands on sale ranged from top to mid-level designer names and the products “run the gamut as far as retail pricing goes”.

She added: “For Family Centre, there’s always a big push at the end of the year to meet their targets helping the community — it’s tough out there, with a lot of families in need.”

The night will also feature a door prize for guests and a silent auction for about 25 designer bags.

Martha Dismont, Family Centre’s executive director, said the fundraiser would help with “critical therapeutic programmes and services to children and families in our community”.

She added: “As we round out our fiscal year, Family Centre, like other charities on the island must ensure the cost of our programmes are met. We are therefore extremely grateful to Megan and friends, who will be putting on this fun event to support the work we do with children and families.

“We encourage everyone to come out and bring their friends. Be prepared to find great bargains, and at the same time you will be supporting children in Bermuda.

The event will accept cash, cheques and bank card purchases. Tickets, at $100, are available online from Premier Tickets and the price includes drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

The event will run from 6pm to 8pm.
