Talks held on boosting solar power
Bermuda’s solar energy was the topic of a meeting this month between solar providers, the Department of Planning and Walter Roban, the home affairs minister.
Mr Roban met with representatives from the Department of Energy, BE Solar, Greenlight Solar, AES, Bermuda Alternate Energy and the environmental group BEST.
Small commercial sites as well as larger solar farms were discussed, along with regulations such as the feed-in tariff — a payback from the utility company Belco to people connected to its network and providing renewable energy.
The FIT was revised in October to better account for costs Belco avoids by buying energy from smaller power producers.
Mr Roban said legislative changes were in the pipeline to improve the application process for renewable energy installations. The group also discussed the possibility of dropping import duty on certain renewable goods, as well as energy conservation, voluntary carbon offset, metering, and going off the grid.
Mr Roban said the meeting was not a one-off, with more to come this year as policy changes developed.
