Family hopeful for return of missing senior
The family of a missing man today appealed to the public to look out for him despite the 24-hour lockdown now in force.
Mervyn Grant, the brother-in-law of Robert Douglas, asked people to keep the 71-year-old in mind during their limited movement around the island.
He said: “On behalf of my sister Roma Douglas, we know that the lockdown is going to come into effect ... for the next two weeks.
“However, while you’re out there grocery shopping or going to the pharmacy, we want you to keep an eye out for Robert.”
Mr Grant added: “We also want to thank you for all your calls and your prayers at this time.
“We know it has been over ten days but we’re still trying to keep a positive outlook that he may be returned to us.”
He said: “We want to thank you for all the prayers that you have been providing for us, and we hope that Robert has a safe return.”
Inspector Karema Flood said that the senior, of My Lord’s Bay Lane, Hamilton Parish, was last seen near his home at about 4pm on March 24.
She added: “There have been several reported sightings of Mr Douglas by members of the community.
“Police officers and soldiers of the Royal Bermuda Regiment have been conducting extensive searches in areas of reported sightings, nature reserves near his residence, parks and trails island-wide.
“The coastguard has been deployed to carry out shoreline searches.
“The Bermuda drone association has also offered their services and have been carrying out aerial searches with the use of drones.
Ms Flood said: “The whereabouts of Mr Douglas is a matter of priority to the BPS and anyone with any information... is asked to contact the main police number at 247-1624.”
Ms Flood said that police officers and RBR soldiers would continue the search over the shelter in place period.
She added: “As you can imagine, the family is concerned for their loved-one and wishes for his safe return.”
Mr Douglas is said to be about 6ft 2in, of slim build and with a dark complexion.
He was wearing a faded blue hat, a blue sweat top with a dark long-sleeved shirt underneath, long black sweatpants, long red socks and black sneakers with white trim when last seen.
Mr Douglas is known to walk from his home to the Crawl Hill Esso service station and Shelly Bay MarketPlace.
