Social justice march on Saturday
Another march in support of social justice is scheduled for this weekend.
The demonstration in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign is organised by Social Justice Bermuda, the group which organised protests outside the United States Consulate last week.
A flyer, posted on Facebook yesterday by social activist Kristin White, said: “We march against racism, fascism and police brutality around the world and here at home.
“Wear a mask. Bring water. Rain or shine. #BlackLivesMatterBDA.”
The march will start in Barr’s Bay Park, Hamilton, at 4pm.
About 7,000 people took part in a Black Lives Matter march through Hamilton last Sunday.
That march was organised by a separate group, Black Lives Bermuda, in response to the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Campaigners have supported efforts for social justice in the United States, but also highlighted the long history of racial inequality in Bermuda.
Barr’s Bay Park, on Pitts Bay Road, is a significant site in the island’s history. The brig Enterprise, transporting enslaved people from Virginia to South Carolina, docked in Barr’s Bay for repairs in 1835 after the ship was blown off course by high winds.
The ship was blockaded by a Royal Navy gunboat after the captain tried to leave when he discovered the people on board could be freed.
A Bermudian formerly enslaved man, Richard Tucker, served the captain of the Enterprise with a writ of habeas corpus — which meant the imprisoned people on board had to be present at a court hearing.
Thomas Butterfield, then the Chief Justice, interviewed all 78 people imprisoned on the ship and ruled that their detention was illegal.
The enslaved people on the Enterprise were given the chance to live in freedom on the island, where slavery had been abolished a year earlier by a British Act of Parliament, and most took up the offer.
Ms White said last night she would release further details before the event, as a permit will be needed.
