The Water Safety Council issued a reminder on water safety after the death of a 27-year-old man on a jet ski last week.

Michael Weeks, the chairman of the council and a Progressive Labour Party backbencher, spoke in response to the accident which claimed the life of Lavonte Williams on the Great Sound last Sunday.

Mr Weeks said: “On behalf of the council I would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the young man who tragically lost his life in the recent marine accident.

“I would like to remind and highlight the importance of water safety.

“As we are fully into the summer season we should be focusing on water safety and still have an enjoyable time with family and friends.”

Mr Williams was carried by boat to the shore at Jews Bay, Southampton, after being thrown from the vehicle.

He was rushed to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors.

Mr Weeks said mariners and jet ski operators should check for ideal weather conditions before being on the water and to make sure that the vessel is in seaworthy condition.

Vessels should be checked for a working VHF Radio, which can be checked with a radio call to Bermuda Radio on channel 27, and the presence of all required safety equipment.

Those who plan to be out on the water should also give their float plan to Bermuda Radio or a responsible individual so that someone is aware of their location.

They should also be vigilant of their surrounding, watch their speed and wake and be courteous to other mariners.

The Department of Marine and Ports, Boats and Moorings Section at the Old Paget Post Office can also be contacted for important information with regards to water safety.

All marine incidents should be reported to Marine Police on Channel 16 and Bermuda Radio on Channel 16 and Channel 27.
