A giant canvas took over the walkway to Masterworks Museum of Art at the weekend as members of the public turned out to imagine things to come.

A 200ft-long canvas was stretched out in the sunshine from the gallery entrance after the museum invited people to join in “canvassing our future” and add their artwork.

Olivia Dale, 8, a Primary 4 pupil at Victor Scott Primary School in Pembroke, worked on a unicorn, her favourite animal. Olivia said saw a bright future with “flying people”.

She added: “The world will be magical.”

Her grandmother, Betty Dale, said the family had been members of Masterworks for years.

The project, the first step in the Paget gallery’s Reimagine our Future Campaign, brought people of all ages together on Saturday to paint.

The canvas will be displayed in the gallery once it is completed.

Peter Frith and his family painted images that represented the struggle for equal rights, from the Rainbow Coalition to Black Lives Matter.

The group also hung up a quote from Bob Marley’s Redemption Song: “None but ourselves can free our minds.”

Mr Frith said the family “love arts and being creative”, and had come out to support his daughter-in-law, Risa Hunter, who was recently appointed as acting director of the museum.

Ms Hunter said the project was the idea of Tom Butterfield, the founder and creative director of Masterworks.

She added: “He wanted to do something like this for several years. Now just felt like the right time.”

Jasmine Lee, a Bermudian fine arts and business management graduate of the University of British Columbia, volunteered at the event.

She said: “It’s about moving forward.” Ms Lee added: “There’s space left — I might add a little something.”
