Pride in Place: Brownlow celebrates 104 not out

A long and uninterrupted innings: Cup Match superfan Brownlow Place celebrates his 104th birthday yesterday in the company of Lovitta Foggo, left, the Minister of Community Affairs and Sport, and Charlene Tyrrell, Mr Place’s daughter (Photograph by Stephen Raynor/Bermuda Government)

There may be no Cup Match this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but superfan Brownlow Place will celebrate the occasion nonetheless.

Mr Place, a devoted Somerset supporter, turned 104 yesterday and was greeted customarily by the Bermuda Government.

“What a remarkable occasion,” Lovitta Foggo, the Minister of Community Affairs and Sport, said yesterday. “Brownlow is one of Bermuda’s most treasured individuals, and all who know Mr Place understand that he is an avid cricket enthusiast and would traditionally be celebrating the classic this year.”

Ms Foggo added: “At 104, Brownlow is as spirited and humble as ever, and I was pleased to be able to spend some time with him and personally convey my heartfelt birthday well wishes.”

Mr Place was accompanied by his daughter, Charlene Tyrrell.
