<Bz39>Kelly injury blow

Bermuda’s teenage pace bowler Stefan Kelly looks doubtful to play any part in the Island’s upcoming triangular series against Bangladesh and Canada which begins tomorrow in Antigua.

The Oakham School student suffered a hamstring pull during a practice session earlier this week and could be out of action for at least two weeks, which would also rule him out of next week’s World Cup warm-up games in St. Vincent against England and Zimbabwe.

It is understood coach Gus Logie had been keen on giving Kelly the new ball.

But the latest setback has scuppered the youngster’s chances of impressing at the famous Antigua Recreation Ground.

Logie and his staff were scheduled to meet yesterday over the matter as Kelly’s injury could even open the door for reserve Ryan Steede to rejoin the squad should team selectors feel they require a replacement.

The new ball is now likely to be shared by Kevin Hurdle, Saleem Mukuddem and teenager Malachi Jones.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Lionel Cann was due to fly in yesterday.

Cann did not travel with the team on Monday as he was recovering from the flu. And the hard-hitting middle order bat was a big miss in Bermuda’s one and only practice match ahead of tomorrow’s ODI against Bangladesh.

Bermuda practised early yesterday morning with an intense workout at their home base at the Jolly Beach Resort in St.John’s before heading off along with rivals Bangladesh and Canada for a special tour of the newly built Sir Viv Richards Stadium that will play host to ‘Super Eight’ World Cup matches next month.

Bermuda take on Canada on Monday in the final match of their triangular series in Antigua before they head off to St.Vincent.
