Sims shock
Just when we all thought Michael Sims had turned a corner on the Nationwide Tour, the Bermuda number one produced a nine-over 80 at the Legends Financial Classic in Ohio yesterday to crash out of the $525,000 tournament in spectacular fashion.
Sims began the second round on the 7,010-yard, par-71 StoneWater Country Club course on four-over for the event and needing to produce a round of 67 or better to have any chance of making the cut.
But a total of four bogeys and one double — together with a extraordinary triple bogey on the par-three 17th — put paid to any hopes Sims may have had of picking up his third pay cheque in as many weeks.
The former Bermuda Open champion finished 12-over for the two rounds and tied for 125th overall — only four spots off the bottom of the field.
The poor result will be a source of huge disappointment for Sims, who had seemingly put the tough times of the first few months on tour behind him after making the cut in his two previous events.
With 15 tournaments remaining, the 28-year-old is 153rd in the Nationwide Tour money list on a total of $12,843 — well outside where he needs to be if he is to automatically re-qualify for the tour again next season.
