Steede's late strike denies battling Boulevard
Dev Cougars 1 Boulevard Blazers 1
Tamani Steede's late strike rescued a point for Devonshire Cougars against a battling ten-man Boulevard at Devonshire Rec last night.
Steede struck seven minutes from time following a mix-up in the Blazers' defence between goalkeeper Shejuan Swan and Sahleel Crockwell. The Boulevard pair both left a Kwame Steede flick on to each other and namesake Tamani nipped between the two before calmly finishing from six yards out.
The goal cancelled out Teiko Lowe's first half goal of the season contender and was tough on a Boulevard side that had to play for the last 30 minutes a man down after Nelson Smith was sent off for a professional foul.
Cougars will argue that the goal was the least their dominating performance deserved, but for the majority of yesterday's game they were unable to get the better of a Boulevard side that defended like their lives depended on it.
Aside from the mistake at the end, Swan had one of his better games in goal for Boulevard and twice denied Cougars with fine saves from Zeiko White and Lejuan Simmons.
Not that the home team helped themselves a great deal, their passing was poor by their own high standards and when they did get into scoring positions they bungled the finish.
There could have been little complaint had Boulevard come away with all three points, and Lowe's goal would be a worthy winner in any game.
After a dull opening 30 minutes when Cougars struggled to find a rhythm and a fired-up Boulevard side stifled them at every turn, the visiting team finally got a chance to attack.
Ajani Gibbons swung in a free-kick from left, it was headed skywards by Cougars defender Kijuan Franks, and as it fell to earth on the edge of the area, Lowe, who had his back to goal, launched himself into a bicycle kick, caught the ball perfectly and it crashed into the goal off the underside of the crossbar.
The visiting team should have been two up less than five minutes later when Takeyi Walker's inch-perfect cross from the right picked out Jason Davis in the box, Davis skipped around Cougars goalkeeper Ricardo Brangman, but then scuffed his shot and Kor-Von Tucker hacked it clear off the line.
White then missed an excellent opportunity to draw his side level, but having got free and with the whole goal at his mercy he smacked the ball straight at Swan.
Cougars were chasing the game from the moment it re-started after the break and Lejuan Simmons might have done better than fire wide when he latched on to cross from Tucker.
At that stage Boulevard were still containing Cougars, but their task was made harder when Smith dragged back Tamani Steede and was sent off by referee Anthony Francis.
Still, Cougars could find no way past Boulevard until they made one mistake in the wrong area and were punished for it. The home side might even have gone on to win it in the nine minutes of injury time that was played, but their failings in front of goal and passing let them down as it had for most of the evening.
St George's 4 Devonshire Colts 1
Alan Douglas scored a hat-trick as St George's climbed to fourth in the Premier Division with an easy win over Devonshire Colts.
Douglas gave his side a 1-0 lead at half time in a game that St George's almost let get away from them.
A clumsy tackle inside the area handed a poor Colts team a way back into the game that they didn't really deserve, and Lozendro Symonds' well taken penalty briefly drew his side level.
Colts though, who struggled in defence all night, were never likely to be able to hold out for long, and Dougals grabbed two more in quick succession before Marcus Anderson's injury time strike gave the scoreline more in keeping with the East End team's performance.
Somerset Eagles 1
Southampton Rangers 4
Southampton Rangers skipper Jermiane Dill was pleased with his side's performance as he grabbed a brace in their comfortable win over Somerset Eagles in the Friendship Cup at Somerset Cricket Club last night.
Dill scored the opener and the fourth for his side while Dennis Russell and Travis Wilkinson also struck in the win. Jonte Simons scored a consolation goal for Eagles in injury time.
Two early goals from Dill and Russell inside the first 10 minutes set the tone for Rangers, who were the better side for much of the first half, although Eagles did have Troy Tucker smash an effort against the woodwork midway through the half.
That though was as good as it got for Eagles. Wilkinson made it three with a neat flick at the near post with 20 minutes left, before Dill grabbed his second and his side's fourth.
In last night's Shield game Prospect beat Social Club 2-1 thanks to goals from Dennis Joell and Kentoine Jennings, although they didn't have it all their own way, with Leonard Raynor's late goal setting up a nervous end to the match.
